Challenge

The customer was utilising third party Content Delivery Network (CDN) and security services. Customer wanted to migrate to AWS Edge Services. The key requirements were to improve their security pillar framework, performance, and cost. Security at the edge was a top priority for the customer. Additionally, they were seeking a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to protect their web applications against common web exploits and bots, which can potentially affect availability, security, and resource consumption.

Solution

We have successfully migrated Amazon Cloudfront CDN service with the necessary configuration. We have further leveraged Lambda@Edge functions to customize content delivered by Amazon CloudFront, thereby executing the functions in AWS locations closer to the viewer. Furthermore, we have mapped the various path and headers based CDN rules onto Amazon Cloudfront. For the security pillar, we have implemented AWS WAF with managed custom rule sets which allows the customer to fine-tune and improve the security posture of their digital properties. We have additionally setup Kinesis for WAF logging purposes and used Amazon Glue and Athena to convert and query the logs, facilitating the fine-tuning of the WAF rules. Lastly, we have set up AWS Advanced Shield to specifically provide DDOS protection.

Benefits

Customer have consolidated end-to-end infrastructure on AWS, which is helping them reduce total cost of ownership (DTO) by approximately 25%. Customer is enjoying benefits of improved integrated security and extensive control over the security configurations.
